Diagnostics and Therapy
Epilepsy is a chronic illness of the brain which is characterized by spontaneously recurrent epileptic seizures. In Germany, approximately 600,000 people, 40% of whom are children, are affected by this illness. Indeed, a large number of various illnesses of the brain can cause epileptic seizures. Fortunately, the majority of childhood epilepsies can be treated effectively with medication and heals without further complication as the children or adolescents grow older.
Approximately 20% of epilepsies, however, do not respond to medicinal treatment. In addition, learning difficulties as well as neuropsychiatric and motor problems can arise in these cases. For this reason, fast and successful treatment is especially important for the brain development of young children suffering from epilepsy.
